Keeping medical equipment clean is crucial when it comes to avoiding bacteria growth, infections and further illness. It may be tricky trying to figure out exactly how to clean your equipment properly, especially if you’re new to the NIV world. We’re here to walk you through the process and give you a better idea of how to keep your equipment sanitary.
What Equipment is Included?
Non-invasive ventilation is designed to assist you with your breathing. This machine comes with various parts, each one serving a different purpose. Here are some of the parts included:
- Machine
- Hose
- Filter
- Mask and straps
Daily Cleaning
Every day, start the morning by wiping the mask down. This can be done by using a damp cloth and warm water, but you can also use soapy water - but make sure you rinse the mask off well afterward.
Weekly or Bi-Weekly Cleaning
Once every one or two weeks, it’s time for the NIV equipment to get a deeper clean.
- Start by separating all the equipment and attachments.
- Wash your mask in soapy water, rinsing it with water and air drying it before further use.
- Wash the straps that are attached to your mask with soapy water, and dry completely before using again.
- Clean out your non-disposable filters each week.
- Clean both the machine and tubing. See further cleaning instructions on these two parts below.
Cleaning the Machine
Cleaning the machine is simple. Start by unplugging it from the power source, then use a damp cloth to wipe the whole thing down. Before plugging it back in, allow it to dry completely.
Cleaning the Tubing
Wash the tubing in warm soapy water, allowing it to soak for a short time if necessary. Rinse with warm water and hang the tubing over a door so the water can drain out as it dries. Avoid hanging it in direct sunlight because that can cause discoloration and cracking over time.
Cleaning the Humidifier
If your machine includes a humidifier, this should also be cleaned each week. Empty out any water and immerse just the humidifier tub in warm, soapy water. After it’s cleaned out, rinse it with water and let it air dry.
